Welcome to the first 30 day challenge! This month’s challenge is:

Clean Media, Clean Mind

You’ve heard “you are what you eat” and it applies to more than just food. So the challenge is to clean up what sites you visit, videos you watch, and music you listen to. After the month is over, tell us via picture or journal how changing what you consume, has changed how you think, speak, and act.  Things to cut out of your media diet: sex, drugs, drinking, swearing, occult, and violence.

These challenges will be harder for some than others, so I’ve included three levels of commitment.

Level 1: baby steps
Cut out media that is blatantly sinful. I’m talking porn, violent movies, songs that swear every other word, etc. If it’s too hard to hold off for 30 days, consider how that itself is a problem. Are you making media an idol? Talk to a trust friend about it or a fellow group member. Also consider listening to a positive radio station: www.klove.com

Level 2: sprint
Cut out all media that glorifies sex, drugs, drinking, searing, occult, and violence. Yes, this means most comedy shows, popular music, and a lot of movies. Think about how much time you spend everyday absorbing negative media and what better things you could be doing with that time. Consider listening to a positive radio station: www.klove.com

Level 3: extra mile
Cut out all negative media and encourage friends and family to do so as well. Listen to positive radio: www.klove.com Research bible verses that emphasize the importance of a clean mind and draw or write a journal about it to share with the group.

I'm glad to see somewhere that takes a stand for Christian values in the media.

I used to read Homestuck, but even with a language filter, it just got too raunchy for me. Those words and dirty terms bounced around in my head and made me a very uncomfortable Christian. So I cut it out of my media diet, and my mind feels a lot cleaner now. A good storyline just isn't worth compromising your values and the sanctity of your mind.

Yeah... it is very...unclean. I have to say I have cut back on it myself. It's really violent too, and it gets to be too much. There's a lot of great books that I should probably have read instead...

I think there is this site that can be connected to this journal very well. The site is called “Setting Captives Free” and I am even enrolled in it. I was very deep in pornography and involving myself in a lot of media that dealt with sexual immorality. With my coming to Christ in July of last year, one of the youth group sponsors on the mission trip I went to recommended this site to me. Basically, this site helps “set captives free” from a habitual sin that people are involved with (whether it be sexual immorality, over eating, self-harm, or even drug and alcohol addiction). You can enroll in one course at a time, but you go through days that you take this course. They’re usually 30-60 days long. They even give you a mentor that responds to your answers that you give on that site. Although it’s not as great as having a physical mentor with you, the mentor is still a big help in giving advice. It’s gotten me through completely removing anything that may cause me to stumble (radical amputation like Matthew 18:7-9 explains). It’s a very good site and I highly recommend it to anybody with a habitual sin or who struggles with letting things that may cause someoneto sin go.
Thank you for your time on reading this.

I'm gonna try level 2, but it'll be really hard, because of the radio station I listen to. I am not ditching HP though.

I can understand that. Just beware of what kind of content you're indulging in. Especially when it comes to fanfics or roleplaying

Yeah. I don't like violent action movies, except for HP and THG. Most fan-fiction is too...swaying from the original for me. Like, I don't read anything that the original creator wouldn't put i the book/show. Thanks! :)

Okay, need to stop the very rare swearing I do, cut out some horror movies, I will stop watching Lost Girl and then I'll be set for the most part.

The problem for me will be anime, I like Bleach and the similar.
But consider this, most if not all anime has some form of occult in it. Even Pokemon has been criticized by some religious figures. Where do we draw the line????

I usually just read the mangas. There I think you get a pre warning to any violence and can just skip about as many pages as you think necessary. You can usually tell by the chapters. At least that’s what i do with Naruto. :/

Well, I'd consider a couple of things. Does it glorify the occult? Is it obviously fantasy or does it touch on real life themes? Does it disturb my connection with God?

Hmmm, not any of the ones I watch,at least most would say not, and yes they are obviously fantasy.

I don't think that's going to happen to me. Sex, it might work, because I like fluffly romance and Valentines day is right around the corner, so I'll be drawing my favorite couples that's full of fluff, but swearing, violence, and occult, I can't do that. Hetalia the Beautiful World just got out, they're full of stereotypes, and in the Funimation dub, there's more cussing than in the Japanese. And does the new TMNT cartoon count as violence, because I like that show?
And besides, we can't ignore negativity from the real world forever, and it'll be even harder for me trying to convince my family, but you're right about one thing; we can still can show positivity towards the people we care about.

We're kinda going with the in, the world not of it theme. Yeah, you cant ignore things like sex and violence, but the more media you consume that is based around those themes causes your mindset to focus around those things.

Either way, this is a 30 day challenge, so I'd encourage you to perhaps just try for a week or so, and see how you manage

I'd doubt, I can ignore the news, because I'm going back to college, but my family won't, especially my mom.
